Katy Perry to be first pop star in space as she joins Jeff Bezos’ all-female rocket trip

Katy Perry is officially heading into space on Jeff Bezos’ rocket voyage, it’s been announced. The Firework singer, 40, has been confirmed as one of the six women taking part in the rocket trip, and making history as the first pop star in space.

She’ll be joining CBS Mornings host Gayle King, and Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, who brought the mission together. They’ll be flying aboard the spacecraft with aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and producer Kerianne Flynn.

‘Katy is honored to be a part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crew and hopes her journey encourages her daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively,’ a statement read.

Though the ET singer has yet to speak out on the mission on her social media, Katy, who shares a daughter with Orlando Bloom, has sent fans absolutely wild with the news, with @otherside_X42 writing on X: ‘umm excuse me what?’

‘Katy Perry being launched into space should be televised in every classroom across the nation,’ @dorseyshaw commented.

@pinkfvday2 added: ‘Katy perry, space, jeff bezos, rocket launch… literally none of these words belong together in a sentence.’

The flight will be launching in spring, though an official date has not yet been announced. It will mark the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program and the 31st in its history.

Journalist and pilot Lauren, 55, is said to be ‘honoured to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come’.

She added in an Instagram video: ‘If someone would have told me that I would be able to go to space one day, I would have laughed! I can’t believe it’s happening.’

‘I thought dreaming of becoming a pilot was a huge deal, and this is even bigger,’ she went on, before praising the ‘incredible’ women embarking on the flight with her.

Meanwhile, Gayle, 70, who has reported on plenty of rocket launches before for CBS, added: ‘I don’t know how to explain being terrified and excited at the same time. It’s like how I felt about to deliver a baby.’

She claimed to have consulted Oprah Winfrey before the ‘new adventure’, saying: ‘I thought Oprah would say no, no. She said, “I think if you don’t do it, when they all come back and you had the opportunity to do it, you will be kicking yourself.” She’s right.’

Speaking of her fellow crew members, she added: ‘These women are so badass, they have such amazing life stories.’

Previous New Shepard passengers have included Star Trek actor William Shatner and Amazon founder Bezos himself.

Blue Origin has flown tourists on short hops to space since 2021.

Some passengers have been given free rides, while others have paid a hefty sum to experience weightlessness.

Bezos, 61, climbed aboard with his brother for the inaugural flight. mKaty’s new space venture comes ahead of her The Lifetimes Tour, following her seventh studio album 143.

Tickets are currently on sale for the 83 concerts, with the tour commencing in Mexico City on April 23 and concluding in Madrid on November 11. The singer came under fire last year with her big comeback, after the release of Woman’s World caused a stir with some people branding the video and lyrics as anti-feminist.

But she didn’t seem to take the criticism to heart, with the Teenage Dream hitmaker telling The Sun: ‘I guess I did step into what I call a “zero f**** 40”.

‘A therapist told me one day, ‘No one can make you feel something about yourself that you already don’t feel about yourself’.

‘So if someone says something about me that isn’t true, it doesn’t affect me because I know who I am now. I know myself better than ever.

‘I care a lot about the things that are worth caring about but if someone’s not being kind or saying untrue things, then it doesn’t really matter.’
